Fasting blood glucose (FBG) test is a laboratory blood test ordered by a health care provider, performed after 8–10 hrs of fasting. This blood test is the most accurate way to determine a blood glucose result. FBG may also be determined using over the counter glucometers. These glucometers may produce FBG results that vary in accuracy by as much as +-15%. There are other conditions and physiological states beyond just diabetes which can alter FBG results. Therefore, it is important for the subject to discuss the meaning of their readings with their health care provider and determine if further assessment is required.
