Irregular Heartbeat Count

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
IHB_COUNTunitless30 seconds0 to 4-

Definition

IHB_COUNT is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the number of Irregular Heartbeats detected for the subject in 30 seconds. It is based on analyzing facial blood-flow data (TOI).

Note

The range provided above represents the nominal range, which serves as a reference for interpreting IHB_COUNT values. It's important to note that the Cloud could occasionally return values that fall outside of this nominal range.

Background

An irregular heartbeat is one that occurs outside of the heart's normal rhythm. The beat may have occurred sooner than expected or subject's heart may have seemed to "skip" a beat. Sometimes it can feel like a thump in subject's chest, or the feeling that their heart is beating quickly or fluttering.

Irregular heartbeats are usually harmless. Most often they are triggered by things that increase adrenaline in the body like anxiety, caffeine, and nicotine.

In rare cases, they could indicate a more serious condition like an electrolyte imbalance or a heart condition. Subject should consult their doctor if they have a persistent irregular heartbeat. Subject should seek immediate medical attention if the onset of irregular heartbeats is combined with other symptoms of a heart problem like dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath.

There is no interpretation table for IHB_COUNT.

Breathing Rate

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
BR_BPMbreaths / minute30 seconds1.2 to 35-
BR_BPM_STRICTbreaths / minute30 seconds6 to 35-

Definition

Breathing Rate (Respiration Rate) corresponds to the number of times the user inhales and exhales, expressed as a rate per minute.

BR_BPM is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Breathing Rate. It is based on analyzing facial blood-flow data (TOI) and subject motion.

BR_BPM_STRICT is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Breathing Rate with a restricted output range - if the estimated Breathing Rate falls outside the range specified in the table above, no value will be returned. It is based on analyzing facial blood-flow data (TOI) and subject motion.

Background

The normal resting breathing rate for adults is between 12 and 25 breaths per minute.

A slower breathing rate may be caused by certain medications or suggest an underlying medical condition, for example, hypothyroidism, heart condition, electrolyte imbalance, etc.

A faster breathing rate could have many causes including walking fast or exercise, asthma, anxiety, infection, or cardiovascular condition. Subject may want to consult their doctor if their breathing rate falls outside of the normal range.

Heart Rate Variability

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
HRV_SDNNms30 seconds1 to 80-

Definition

HRV_SDNN is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's SDNN, which is a measure of Heart Rate Variability

Background

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) refers to the variability in the timing between one heartbeat and the next. One way to measure HRV is SDNN, the calculated standard deviation (in milliseconds) of observed intervals that fall between normal (NN) heartbeats. A higher SDNN corresponds to more inter-beat variability. DeepAffex estimates SDNN as HRV_SDNN.

Increased heart rate variability suggests an increase in parasympathetic activity and/or a decrease in sympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system.

High resting heart rate variability is considered healthy and means that the heart is more flexible to the changing needs of the body.

Cardiac Workload

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
BP_RPPdB30 seconds3.71 to 4.28👤1

Definition

BP_RPP is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Cardiac Workload. It is calculated using the formula: Pulse Rate × Systolic Blood Pressure.

Background

Cardiac Workload, or more precisely myocardial workload, is a measure of the stress put on the heart muscle.

When measured at rest, this index can be used as an indicator of cardiovascular health.

For example, a person who exercises regularly may have a lower Cardiac Workload than another person who lives a sedentary lifestyle. During an intense physical exercise, subject's Cardiac Workload may increase but should decrease post-exercise.

Definition

BP_TAU is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Vascular Capacity.

Background

Vascular Capacity or Tau, is a measure of the elasticity of subject's blood vessels.

When measured at rest, this index can be used as an indicator of cardiovascular health as it is strongly correlated with vascular stiffness.

A person with a high Tau has better vascular health compared to a person with a low Tau. Also, certain transient activities and physiological events can lead to immediate changes in Tau (e.g., drinking alcohol, smoking).

NuraLogix Mental Stress Index

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
MSIunitless30 seconds1 to 5.9-

Definition

MSI is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Mental Stress. It is a proprietary score that quantifies the user's mental stress level on a 5-point scale, from relaxed (Level 1) to overloaded (Level 5). It is based on heart rate variability (the subtle variations in timing between one heartbeat and the next), which is related to mental stress.

Background

Mental Stress is the change in the internal homeostasis caused by a psychological, physiological, or environmental stressor. Stimuli that cause stress result in the activation of sympathetic nervous system rendering a chain of physiological changes.

Body Mass Index

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
BMI_CALCkg/m²5 seconds10 to 65👤1

Definition

BMI_CALC is the subject's Body Mass Index as calculated by the DeepAffex Cloud using the height and weight in the measurement’s user profile information. It will be estimated by the DeepAffex Cloud, if user profile information is not provided.

Background

Body Mass Index is a measure of an individual's tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) adjusted for height. It is a commonly used indicator of overall body fat and serves as a tool for categorizing individuals as being underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese on the basis of health risk.

Body Mass Index is a fair predictor of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, gallstones, and certain cancers. It is the one of the best anthropometric predictors of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride levels; these are important factors for cardio-metabolic diseases. It is also one of the best anthropometric predictors of uric acid levels (high uric acid levels contribute to gallstones). A limitation of Body Mass Index is that it cannot distinguish between fat and muscle mass and thus can be inaccurate in muscular individuals.

A subject can calculate their Body Mass Index using the formula: weight in kg / (height in m)²

According to the World Health Organization:

Body Mass IndexWeight Status
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5–24.9Normal weight
25.0–29.9Pre-obesity
30.0–34.9Obesity Class I
35.0–39.9Obesity Class II
40 or aboveObesity Class III

Body Shape Index

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
ABSIunitless5 seconds6.19 to 8.83👤1

Definition

Body Shape Index is a measure of abdominal region size (as determined by waist circumference) relative to overall body size (as determined by Body Mass Index and height).

ABSI is the subject's Body Shape Index as calculated by the DeepAffex Cloud using the measurement’s user profile information. It will be estimated by the DeepAffex Cloud, if user profile information is not provided.

Background

A low Body Shape Index corresponds to a ‘chilli pepper'-shaped body. As BSI increases, body shape resembles a pear, then a pineapple, and then an apple. A larger abdominal region suggests elevated levels of deep abdominal fat, which is associated with various health risks.

Body Shape Index is a particularly good predictor of mortality (from all causes), as well as a fair predictor of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It is associated with elevated triglyceride levels, which may partially contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases.

For more information, see: Zhou, W., Wang, Y., Gu, X., Feng, Z. P., Lee, K., Peng, Y., & Barszczyk, A. (2020) Importance of general adiposity, visceral adiposity and vital signs in predicting blood biomarkers using machine learning. International Journal of Clinical Practice, e13664.

Interpretation Tables

Note

The ABSI value is scaled up by multiplying by 100 to avoid handling very small values in the decimal range. The range given in the tables is obtained after the scaling.

Definition

Hypertension Risk corresponds to the percentage of people with the subject's risk profile who are diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) by their doctor.

HPT_RISK_PROB is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Hypertension Risk.

Background

This risk profile is based on their facial blood flow (TOI) and subject profile information.

Hypertension is a major treatable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, those with a high hypertension risk should consider getting screened for hypertension by their doctor.

Notice: Moment-to-moment fluctuations in subject's physiology mean that their risk estimates could vary to some degree from one measurement to the next. The best estimate of subject's overall risk is therefore obtained by averaging several measurements throughout the day and across several days to adequately account for this physiological variation.

Fatty Liver Disease Risk

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
FLD_RISK_PROB%30 seconds0 to 100👤1

Definition

Fatty Liver Disease Risk corresponds to the percentage of people with the subject's risk profile who are diagnosed with fatty liver disease. When the accumulation of fat in the liver exceeds 5% of its total mass, it is classified as fatty liver.

FLD_RISK_PROB is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Fatty Liver Disease Risk.

Background

Fatty liver disease is characterized by the accumulation of triglyceride lipids within the liver cells, leading to an abnormal increase in liver size. Its development involves multiple contributing factors. These include excessive alcohol consumption, which impairs liver function and promotes the retention of fatty acids; metabolic syndrome, characterized by obesity and insulin resistance, which leads to the accumulation of fatty acids in the liver; and dietary factors such as high fructose intake, which contributes to the storage of excessive fat in liver cells. These factors collectively play a role in the development and progression of fatty liver disease.

Overall Metabolic Health Risk

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
OVERALL_METABOLIC_RISK_PROB %30 seconds0 to 100👤1

Definition

Overall Metabolic Health Risk is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Overall Metabolic Health Risk. It offers a comprehensive assessment of an individual's susceptibility to a spectrum of metabolic conditions. It utilizes information from facial blood flow measurements (TOI) and data about the individual's profile to measure and estimate the likelihood of certain health issues occurring.

Background

The combination of the outlined risks—Hypertension Risk, Type 2 Diabetes Risk, Hypertriglyceridemia Risk, Hypercholesterolemia Risk, and Fatty Liver Disease Risk—forms a comprehensive image of an individual's metabolic health. Evaluated via facial blood flow (TOI) measurements and subject's profile data, these risks highlight the complex overlap between metabolic well-being and cardiovascular health.

The combined impact of these risks emphasizes the necessity for taking proactive steps in managing one's health. The potential emergence of high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, elevated triglyceride and cholesterol levels, or fatty liver disease emphasizes the significance of adopting healthier habits and seeking guidance from professionals. The combined impact of these risks has a broader influence that reaches into the area of potential heart-related problems and disorders that affect blood vessels, which can include a range of cardiovascular diseases.

Notice: Moment-to-moment fluctuations in the subject's physiology mean that their risk estimates could vary to some degree from one measurement to the next. Therefore, the best estimate of the subject's overall risk is obtained by averaging several measurements throughout the day and across several days to adequately account for this physiological variation.

Hemoglobin A1C Risk

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
HBA1C_RISK_PROB%30 seconds0 to 100👤1

Definition

Hemoglobin A1C Risk corresponds to the percentage of people with the subjects's risk profile who had their HbA1c levels above 5.7% when tested, indicating an elevated risk of prediabetes.

HBA1C_RISK_PROB is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Hemoglobin A1C Risk.

Background

This risk profile is based on their facial blood flow (TOI) and subject profile information.

HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin is formed when glucose from the blood stream combines with hemoglobin in red blood cells. The HbA1c test is a laboratory blood test ordered by the subject's health care provider. It estimates the average blood glucose level during the past 2–3 months by measuring the amount of glycated hemoglobin A1c in a person's blood.

The higher the A1c percentage, the higher the blood glucose levels, thus helping in the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. There are other conditions and physiological states beyond just diabetes which may alter HbA1c values. Therefore, it is important for the subject to discuss the meaning of their readings with their health care provider and determine if further assessment is required.

Notice: Moment-to-moment fluctuations in subject's physiology mean that their risk estimates could vary to some degree from one measurement to the next. The best estimate of subject's overall risk is therefore obtained by averaging several measurements throughout the day and across several days to adequately account for this physiological variation.

Definition

Fasting Blood Glucose Risk corresponds to the percentage of people with the subjects's risk profile who had their blood glucose levels above 5.5 mmol/L when tested after 8–10 hours of fasting, indicating a high risk of prediabetes.

MFBG_RISK_PROB is the DeepAffex Cloud's estimate of the subject's Fasting Blood Glucose Risk.

Background

This risk profile is based on subject's facial blood flow (TOI) and their profile information.

Fasting blood glucose (FBG) test is a laboratory blood test ordered by a health care provider, performed after 8–10 hrs of fasting. This blood test is the most accurate way to determine a blood glucose result. FBG may also be determined using over the counter glucometers. These glucometers may produce FBG results that vary in accuracy by as much as +-15%. There are other conditions and physiological states beyond just diabetes which can alter FBG results.

Background

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a measure of the variation in time between successive heartbeats and is influenced by various physiological factors that impact heart rate and variability, including breathing patterns, blood pressure regulation, and natural daily rhythms such as sleep-wake cycles, physical activity, and food intake. HRV can be analyzed in three main domains: time domain, frequency domain, and non-linear domain.

In the time domain, HRV is measured through various statistical measures of the inter-beat intervals, such as the standard deviation of the RR intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD), and the percentage of successive RR intervals that differ by more than 50 ms (pNN50). In the frequency domain, HRV is analyzed by looking at the power of the ECG signal in different frequency bands, which are called VLF, LF, and HF. These bands represent different ranges of frequencies, with VLF being the lowest, and HF being the highest. In the non-linear domain, HRV is analyzed using more complex mathematical methods like DFA and entropy measures. These methods provide information on how the inter-beat intervals vary in complexity and randomness.

Overall, HRV analysis provides important information about cardiovascular function and overall health and can help guide interventions to improve overall health and well-being.

There is no interpretation table for HRV Advanced Parameters.

Note

TOI is designed to provide quick HRV measurements in just 30 seconds, but it's important to recognize that HRV analysis is typically performed over much longer periods of time to obtain accurate results. In general, electrocardiograms of at least 240-300 seconds are needed to reliably measure HRV. While short-term HRV measurements such as SDNN and RMSSD can be a useful approximation of longer-term HRV, there are some limitations. RMSSD is generally considered to be a more reliable measure than SDNN and averaging multiple 10-second ECG recordings can help to improve accuracy. However, it's important to use caution when interpreting the results of TOI, as it is subject to limitations similar to other short-term HRV analysis methods.

Signal to Noise Ratio

IDUnitAvailable AfterRangeAlso Needs
SNRdB5 seconds-10 to +20-

Definition

SNR is computed by the DeepAffex Cloud for every measurement. It is the signal-to-noise ratio of the blood-flow signal and expressed in decibels.

Background

SNR is affected by many factors, some of which are listed below in the order of significance:

  • Camera sensor quality
  • Distance from camera (i.e., pixels per mm of skin)
  • Movement
  • Lighting
  • Skin tone
  • Obstructions on the face such as makeup, sunscreen, eye-glasses, etc.
  • Camera lens quality and cleanliness

Interpretation

SNR values less than 0.5dB are considered to be too low for reliable estimation of other signals. In these circumstances, the DeepAffex Cloud doesn't compute any other signals present in the Study and returns a sentinel value of -100dB.

For most applications that perform 30-second measurements using 5-second chunks, we recommend the following rules to cancel a measurement early based on SNR:

  • If SNR < 0.5 at 15 seconds (after three 5-second chunks) OR
  • If SNR < 0.5 for two of the remaining three 5-second chunks
    • Cancel measurement
  • If SNR < 0.5 for the last chunk
    • Do not display measurement results
